This news deserves an exclamation point because I really love this casting! Armie Hammer is a true talent on the rise and he just seems like the perfect fit for this, even beyond Ryan Gosling, who was rumored as of just a few weeks ago. But now Deadline is saying that they've heard Armie Hammer, seen in The Social Network, is "in early talks" to star with Johnny Depp in The Lone Ranger as The Lone Ranger. Just think about it, his face, his height, this guy is just perfect for Reid. Hammer also recently took a role in Relativity's Snow White as the prince, and he's shooting Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar, so he is busy, but this is great news.
The Lone Ranger's origin story begins with a group of Texas Rangers chasing down a gang of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish. The gang ambushes the Rangers, seemingly killing them all. One survivor is found, however, by an American Indian named Tonto (Depp), who nurses him back to health. The Ranger (Hammer), donning a mask and riding a white stallion named Silver, teams up with Tonto to bring the unscrupulous gang and others of that ilk to justice. At the helm of this new take on The Lone Ranger is Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski, working from a script by Justin Haythe (The Clearing, Revolutionary Road) and Jerry Bruckheimer producing. I really hope this casting ends up set in stone, as I'd love to see Hammer take this on. I'm not sure everyone agrees with that, but I'm all for it! Anyone else?
